Something outside of ourselves to keep us moving forward, moving toward good. When I think of the year this piece was created – 2020 – that time in our world, these words emerge: Unrest. Uncertainty. Fear. Silenced Voices. Defiance. Tension. Anger. Vulnerability. Worry. Sickness. Loss. Dread. Similar words could be used to describe the time in Israel’s history over 2000 years ago. Israel, oppressed by the Roman Empire, was desperate for redemption. They looked for the Messiah as a conquering king, one to upend Roman rule and re-establish the kingdom of Israel in the midst of its enemies. But the King was delivered in an unlikely package: A baby – vulnerable, defenseless, dependent. Born to a young woman with a sketchy sounding conception story, into a little regarded family, from a lowly regarded region, on the road, away from home. THIS was the powerful hope God had in mind for a world gone mad?? Yes. Hope. The perfect gift, right on time. For this appearance unto us, He came not to conquer with a sword, but to redeem the unseen sickness plaguing the human heart. Hope, in unexpected form, from beyond this world, came to earth. Hope pierces through the adversity. Hope focuses a restless heart. Hope transcends any moment that you find yourself stuck in and sets an eternal point into your sights. Hope provides perspective. An EF3 tornado impacted Hermitage, destroying many homes and businesses in its path, including the then-current location of Magnitude 10.0 Gymnastics. The building was a total loss, and the family and community of Magnitude found themselves without a home, but not without hope. In the midst of destruction, founder and owner Maggie Thorpe-Nelson strengthened herself and set her resolve to get back up and face the hard road to rebuild and come back, together, stronger than before. Salvaging fragments of life, memories, and past victories from the site, the pieces found their way into the hands of Sabrina Winter Shun, a Nashville area artist and founder of Mosaic People, whose heart is to tell personal stories of redemption through old and new world methods of artistry. Something outside of ourselves to keep us moving forward, moving toward good. When I think of the year this piece was created – 2020 – that time in our world, these words emerge: Unrest. Uncertainty. Fear. Silenced Voices. Defiance. Tension. Anger. Vulnerability. Worry. Sickness. Loss. Dread. Similar words could be used to describe the time in Israel’s history over 2000 years ago. Israel, oppressed by the Roman Empire, was desperate for redemption. They looked for the Messiah as a conquering king, one to upend Roman rule and re-establish the kingdom of Israel in the midst of its enemies. But the King was delivered in an unlikely package: A baby – vulnerable, defenseless, dependent. Born to a young woman with a sketchy sounding conception story, into a little regarded family, from a lowly regarded region, on the road, away from home. Out of darkness, came glorious Light. Indeed, Hope Gave All. —————————————————- The Heart Behind The Piece This is the second piece in our “Hope” series (following “Hope Has Come”). Let me share my heart behind this piece and talk about the cross and the colors. The Cross The cross Jesus bore was very heavy, jagged in nature, raw wood, unsanded, nothing glamorous. There was nothing comfortable about a cross like this. It likely gave our Savior splinters in his back and tore his skin. Yet as we reflect on that cross, we can also reflect and glory in the fact that He’s no longer there. The work has been done. Because of that finished work, we are invited into the beauty of forgiveness, healing, restoration and freedom that bursts forth from the daily resurrection work in our lives. If I’m honest, I’ve found it difficult to pull that reality into my own life over the years. How does what happened thousands of years ago affect me today? But as the years march on, the simple symbol of the cross has become more and more precious to me. This guilded cross represents how God can take something ordinary and do extraordinary things with it. Just like He does with you and me. It’s a reminder that in this life we will share in the sufferings of Christ as His children and followers. Whatever we face, whatever is ahead, He has a path. He is the path. We can believe His promises for life on Earth as it is in Heaven. I pray when life is too hard to bear, that we let the strength of the Cross hold us up. The Colors The design is simple yet boasts much color. The brilliance is blasting out from the sides of the cross, representing victory and breaking forth into New Life.
